Levon Helm (1940 - 2012)
I heard the news last night that Levon had died, so just had to listen to The Band’s eponymous album in the car this morning. Such a great record.
Helm’s drumming style (like his voice) you would say was simplistic, yet quirky I suppose. I’m quite in awe of the way he could sing AND play at the same time… and sing like THAT. It sounds daft, but I also love his pose in the photo on the back of that album - he looks sort of gangsta (in a hillbilly kind of way!) making that gesture with sticks in hand - very cool. R.I.P.
